Animals big and small are explored in a variety of stimulating ways in this LANGUAGE ACROSS THE CURRICULUM theme. An OFSTED inspector in the UK who examined the theme commented that I should write as many of this type of theme as possible as she saw the intense interest of the pupils who used them. Language learning takes places through:
• Spelling and dictation activities
• Comprehension exercises
• Vocabulary building
• sentence building
• opportunities for creative writing
The most effective use of this theme is to copy the entire theme (leaving out the instruction to teachers pages) and staple it into a booklet that a pupil can work through. Some teachers have used the theme for whole class teaching by handing out a page or two a day which are glued into the pupil’s book.
