Complete Graded Spelling Lists - Year 1 is a complete set of spelling lists for Year One, an essential resource for teaching and testing children in English spelling and vocabulary. With 50 spelling lists, graded for difficulty, it lists the first 800 English words a child must learn, divided into basic spelling units of sixteen words. Each list’s words display the same spelling pattern, so that words are learned in units, the spelling pattern reinforced by each word’s relation to others on the list. There are also five extension words per list, which develop the basic vocabulary and teach the rules for adding prefixes and suffixes to the listed words.
The Year 1 lists include these spelling patterns:
Simple consonant-vowel-consonant words
Simple words with oo, ee, ar, aw, ow and ay
Simple words with qu~, sh~, ~sh, th~ and ~th
Simple words ending in ~ck, ~ff, ~ll and ~ss
Four letter words with blended consonants
Four letter ‘magic e’ words
High frequency single-syllable words
The file also includes five 50-word spelling tests, each covering ten lists, and a final 50-word spelling test that covers all 50 lists.
This resource provides a complete spelling program, allowing primary school children and other students of English a systematic approach to the mastery of English spelling.
The Complete Graded Spelling Lists series includes lists for Years 1-6. There are also exercise materials based on the same lists: Complete Graded Spelling Lists with Spelling and Vocabulary Exercises. These provide an extensive range of weekly exercises for students to practice using the listed spelling words.
